A multi-stoey building collapsed at Lagos street in Garki, Abuja trapping many people while two others sustained injuries on Wednesday.
Wakadaily learnt that the building which housed many apartments, while the ground floor was full of shops collapsed during the downpour which started at about 11:pm on Wednesday.
An eyewitness who spoke who journalists said: “There was wailing all over the place after the building collapsed. Dozens of people are either dead or trapped as the building is fully occupied. It was a scene of helplessness with people screaming and going helter-skelter, while the heavy rain continues,” he added.
Dr Abbas Idriss, the Director General of FCT Emergency Management Agency FEMA, confirmed that 37 people has been rescued, adding that victims have been evacuated to various medical facilities in Abuja.
“Thirty Seven persons have so far been rescued and evacuated to hospital, others reportedly still trapped. Rescue team and others are on ground. Rescue operations on but slowly due to ongoing rain”. They are making frantic efforts at getting an excavator to remove people from the rubble.”
