Sanwo-Olu to announce monthly sanitation, says commissioner

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos State Governor, is expected to declare the commencement of monthly environmental sanitation programme in the state.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, said on Sunday that the governor would make the announcement soon.

According to a statement by Kunle Adeshina, the ministry’s spokesperson, the state government also explained the importance of good sanitation practices among all residents in order to ensure a clean, flood-free, safe and sustainable environment all over the state.

The emphasis was made by Wahab during the weekly community-based environmental sanitation advocacy campaign held at Omobokun Street, Ekimogun Underbridge, Iyana Oworo, Bariga Local Council Development Area.

What we are trying to do is to ramp up sensitisation and advocacy before the formal commencement of the monthly environmental sanitation, which will soon be announced by the governor,” the commissioner said.

The commissioner also mentioned that some houses in the state had been investigated and were found to have channelled their septic tanks into drainage channels or erected structures over them.

Wahah said such buildings would be sealed by the state government.

On the issue of flooding experienced in the area, Wahab said the government would reassess the claims by the community members that the sand filling carried out at Oworo end was responsible for the flooding experienced in the Ekimogun area, adding that the government was determined to proffer a lasting solution to the problem.

Also speaking, Kolade Alabi, the Chairman of Bariga LCDA, said Governor Sanwo-Olu inaugurated the Ekimogun Road but it was disheartening that the road was still in a bad condition because of the unsanitary attitude of residents.

We the residents of Bariga must, therefore, stop littering our roads and canals with waste. We must bag our waste in our respective homes and always patronise the PSP operators,” he said.
