On Tuesday, enraged youths and furious vendors set fire to a portion of Abuja’s Wuse Market. The incident occurred when a police officer stationed at the market’s Mobile Court allegedly shot a guy who had been accused and found guilty as he attempted to flee.
Although officers of the Nigeria Police Force had sealed off the market to restore order, a credible source within Abuja Market Management Limited mentioned that efforts were being made by FCT Fire Service officers to put out the fire and stop it from spreading.
The Management’s office, along with a number of stores and vehicles in the market, were destroyed in the fire, according to AMML Public Relations Officer Innocent Amaechina.
In a text interview, a market vendor (name not disclosed) told our newsmen that task force police frequently patrol the market, apprehending people they believe to be criminals.
He said that an unarmed civilian was shot and killed by a police task force officer, which resulted in the unrest.
In details, “I have a shop at the market. But I was not around when the riot escalated, I called and was told that the market task force had killed one of the hustlers which led to a revolt by his people. They started burning down the prison bus that was present. Some shops were affected in the incident. The task force shot and killed an unarmed civilian.”
Amiola Adebayo, the director of the FCT Fire Service, did not answer calls at his phone in the interim. Additionally, SP Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, stated that she was gathering information on the subject and would respond as soon as she had more.
“We are still trying to find out what is going on, please. I would revert to you. Right now, we don’t have details we are trying to quell the situation here right now.” She said.
