Following the King’s approval on Monday, the Touquet-Paris-Plage airport has been given permission to be renamed after the late British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.

Officials in the town hall siad the airport will be charged to Elizabeth II Le Touquet-Paris-Plage International Airport in honour of the Queen.

The tribute to the “Great Queen” would also recognise the “most British of French resorts”, BBC reports.

It also noted that the inauguration date has not been disclose yet, but the renaming came after the original proposal was made to the British Crown six days after the death of the Queen on 8 September last year.

Recall that the United Kingdom’s longest-serving monarch, Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96, at the Buckingham Palace.

Le Touquet’s town hall on Monday said “That King Charles III accepted the proposal of the mayor of Le Touquet further reinforces the strategy of the latter who wants to affirm Le Touquet as ‘the most British of French resorts.”

The town hopes that changing the name of its airport will improve its ties to the UK and welcome tourist planes from across the Channel.

The airport was designed in the 1930s to welcome Britons to the coastal town approximately an hour’s drive from Calais. There is also a vacation residence owned by the president Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte.
