Lawal Pedro(SAN), the Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, has declared that the state is fully prepared for state police, and are waiting for the creation to commence.
In a statement, he made in an interview on Saturday in Lagos, with the News Agency of Nigeria on the sidelines of the 10th Ramadan Lecture organised by Anwar-ul Islam Old Students Association, titled “Economic insecurity in Nigeria: Islamic Solutions.”
Wakadaily gathered that 16 state governors have submitted reports expressing their support for establishing state police to the National Economic Council.
This reports was among the documentation received at the 140th NEC meeting conducted by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja last Thursday.
In the same vein, the Lagos State AG stated that he has been promoting state police as far back as 2001, to improve state security.
“We are talking about a police system that is indigenous to the people themselves.
“Lagos is more than ready for state police. I can assure you of that because we have our own Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps already in place and fully kitted and ready with even body cameras.
“I think we are ready to go in Lagos. If any state is ready, I can confirm to you today from what Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has done, Lagos is ready.
“Just give the nod and you see our police officers on the road,” Pedro said.
