Helen Folasade Adu (born January 16th, 1959) professionally known as Sade Adu is a British Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer.
She came to the limelight with her soul-inspired song ‘Smooth Operator’ and also gained worldwide fame as the lead vocalist of the English band, Sade.

Early Life & Education
Sade Adu was born on January 16, 1959, in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, but is a native of Ekiti State, although she was raised in London.
Her father, Adebisi Adu is a Nigerian lecturer in Economics while her mother, Anne Hayes is an English district nurse.
Sade’s parents met in London, married in 1955, and moved to Nigeria. When Sade was four years old, her parents separated. Anne Hayes then returned to England, taking Sade and her elder brother Banji to live with their grandparents.
She completed her education at Clacton County High School before she moved to London to study Fashion design at Saint Martin’s School of art.
Career
Sade began back up singing with the British band Pride after completing her high school education.
During that time, she formed a songwriting partnership with Pride’s guitarist/saxophonist Stuart Matthewman; together, backed by Pride’s rhythm section, they began doing their own sets at Pride gigs.
She recorded her first album, Diamond Life which was released in 1984.
In late 1985, the band released their second album, Promise, which peaked at number one in both the UK and the US and became the band’s first album to reach number one on the US Billboard 200.
She got married to a Spanish filmmaker, Carlos Scola in 1989 although they later separated. She had a daughter, Ila Morgan with a Jamaican producer, Bobby Morgan.
