Nigerian singer, Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, popularly known as Spyro stated that celebrities owe it to their fans to live a moral lifestyle.
Giving an example of his late mentor Sound Sultan, Spyro said it was possible to be a celebrity and live a decent life.
He made this known while speaking on the The Honest Bunch podcast, co-hosted by Nedu and actor Chinedu Ani.
He said, “I saw Sound Sultan, he doesn’t drink nor smoke. Even when we go to club, you won’t see him chasing women.
“We owe it to the fans to live a decent life. The first time I met Sound Sultan, he sat me down on his dinning table and told me, ‘A lot of politicians come to me because they know if I support them, everybody will do the same”.
“He said (Sound Sultan) they [politicians] would bring a lot of money. Dem go put Ghana-must-go down say just support. But then he told me that if he accept, wetin him dey plan down for his kids? But now he is actually gone.
“We live like we own our lives. You are going to leave your kids behind one day. What are you leaving them to? What kind of society are you creating and you’re leaving them to? He [Sound Sultan] made that impact on me.”
Sypro went further to speak on people always trying to box him, saying he is just a singer that is expected to make good music.
“Why should I be boxed as a gospel singer or secular singer? I’m just a singer and it is expected of me to make decent music.”
Still speaking on the podcast, he made a statement regarding a lyrics of one of singer Shallipopi’s song which had geared many reactions from social media users.
Stating an example of how songs can affect an individual Spyro said, “ when you keep singing para de body that’s how fraud comes in”.
Many social media have found this statement offensive as they think his been judgmental.
Others pointed that he wasn’t doing what he preach as he was signed to a worldly record label and even did the collaboration of his popular song ‘Who’s your guy’ with a secular artist, Tiwa Savage and not a gospel singer.
