Onana leaves Cameroon W’Cup after fallout with coach

Andre Onana, Cameroon’s first-choice goalkeeper in the 2022 World Cup being played in Qatar, is expected to depart the country as a result of dispute with national team’s coach, Rigobert Song.

Onana was removed from the country’s squad in their dramatic 3-3 match with Serbia on Monday afternoon, having been reportedly involved in a face-off with the manager over the squad’s style of play.

According to Daily Mail UK, “the emotional dispute came after Song lambasted the stopper during training for taking too many risks playing with his feet. The coach had wanted Onana to play in a more conventional, risk-free fashion and was unhappy with the way the keeper advanced off his line to start attacks from the back.

After the match, Song confirmed that Andre Onana has left the squad due to “disciplinary reasons” but the goalkeeper has been asked to return to discuss his situation.

The coche said, “In a squad you need to see discipline and if you can’t fit in with that discipline, with what’s required to be part of a squad, then you need to accept responsibility for that.

“We don’t question his ability – he plays for one of the top teams in Europe – but you need to ensure the team takes precedence over the individual.”

“He is a very important player but we are at the World Cup and my role is to put the team first ahead of an individual.

“He is one of the best keepers in Europe. This is not about his performances but you have to preserve the squad.

“Maybe it was the trigger we needed for this performance (against Serbia). It was a big risk that I took, but I’m the dad of these kids so when I have to take risks and make decisions, I do that and I stand by what I do.

“At the moment I’ve asked Onana to wait and we will see if he is going to stay with us. It’s up to him,” Rigobert Song said.
