Buhari unveils N120bn solar power project in Kano

The 10 megawatt solar energy project, which cost $15 million (N120 billion), was unveiled by the president Muhammadu Buhari on Monday in the Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State. The project’s goal is to improve home and industrial power supplies.

The President while unveiling the project expressed hope that it would help to revive ailing industries that depend on electricity to power their giant plants in the state.

The Managing Director and the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority, Aminu Sagir, in his remarks, described the project as a progress for the people towards adding value to the economy.

He said, “The project is to be supervised and managed by the NSIA which is jointly owned by the federal government, Kano State government and the host community.

The project is currently the largest grid-connected solar PV plant and is proof of successful mid-sized solar PV deployment in Nigeria. This would catalyse growth in the power sector as it shows that renewable projects of this magnitude can be successfully delivered. It also builds Nigeria’s credentials in the fight against climate change and our commitment to attaining net zero carbon emissions by 2060.”
