Supreme Court adjourns naira redesign suit till March 3

The Supreme Court has on Wednesday adjourns the judgment on naira redesign policy suit filed by some state government till 3 March.

Wakadaily reported that government of Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara state have dragged the Federal Government before the Supreme Court over the scarcity of new and old naira notes seeking a restraining order to stop the full implementation of the policy.

Meanwhile, on 8 February, the Supreme Court ordered a suspension of the deadline for the swapping of old to new Naira notes by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The Supreme Court issued an interim injunction restraining the Federal Government from suspending the acceptance of the old Naira notes on the Friday February 10, 2023 deadline.

However, the Governor of CBN, Godwin Emefiele, disobeyed the Supreme Court on currency swap order, insists on February 10, 2023 deadline for the withdrawal of old currency notes.

During Wednesday’s proceeding, counsel for Lagos State, Moyosore Onigbanjo, prayed the court to prohibit the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, from defending the respondents while acting in contempt of initial court orders as he “comes tongue in cheek to ask for reliefs”.

He said the “issue of contempt, supersedes issue of jurisdiction”.

Responding, Justice John Okoro, said, “you are not a stranger to this country.
We don’t want a situation where the judiciary will be a scapegoat. We refuse to be the scapegoat”.

“We are hearing this matter today. We don’t intend to keep this matter longer… whether they obey it or not”.
