I was so shy first time meeting Don Jazzy – Ayra Starr

Beninese-born Nigerian singer, Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, popularly known as Ayra Starr, has recounted how she felt the first time she met Don Jazzy.

During her interview in the latest Teen Vogue magazine edition, Ayra Starr describes the ace music executive as the ‘coolest person ever.’

The ‘Sabi Girl’ crooner said she was very shy the first time she met the Mavins record label founder, but as time goes by she realised he was a cool and calm person.

The 21-year-old Afrobeat star said,  “I remember the first time meeting him, I was just so shy. I would be in the studio with my brother and if he leaves the room, we look at each other and scream, ‘Oh, my God!’ But when I met him, he was the coolest person ever. He just wanted to speak to me, to understand where my mind was. He saw that I wanted it so much.”

Ayra Starr also expressed gratitude to the manager, thanking him for his guidance throughout her career so far, saying, “There’s guidance, and I appreciate it so much because I don’t know everything.”

The ’19 and Dangerous’ hitmarker detailed her experience in her first year of recording music with her boss and how he allowed her to discover her own sound.

“My first year recording music Jazzy left me in the studio and he said, ‘Just make music.’ He didn’t say, ‘Make this type of music or sing about this.’ Everything was left up to me and I discovered myself. I feel like I’m still discovering my sound.”

Don Jazzy earlier said he knew he was going to sign Ayra the moment he saw her video on instagram.

I first saw a video of her [Ayra Starr] singing one of her original songs on Instagram. Her voice was so powerful, yet she looked so young. Immediately, I knew I would like to work with her. I sent her a direct message inviting her to our studio with a guardian.”
