LP Chairman Julius Abure Arrested in Edo State

The Labour Party’s (LP) National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, had been detained on Wednesday in Edo State by Nigerian police.

The details surrounding his arrest in Benin City are still unknown as of the time this information was published.

Pictures and videos that showed Abure sitting on the ground before the cops drove him away became viral on social media.

Most people assume that his detainment stems from the current party issue.

Abure has faced criticism for purportedly misappropriating over N3 billion in Party finances, among other charges of financial abuse.

Oluchi Oparah, the National Treasurer, who was recently suspended, demanded that Abure give an explanation for the N3.5 billion purportedly obtained from the fundraising efforts and the sale of nomination forms preceding the general election in 2023.

During a news conference held in Abuja last week, Oluchi stated that the sale of nomination forms for the general elections of 2023 brought in over N3.5 billion while Abure was in charge.

“However, apart from the proceeds of the sale of forms from his home state of Edo – which was diverted to Mr Abure’s private accounts, he only declared N55 million to me as Treasurer, of the over N3.5 billion raised, pocketing the rest for himself,” she clearly stated.

Providing documentation and copies of checks allegedly signed by the treasurer, LP National Chairman Abure maintained that the charges of corruption were fabricated specifically to harm his reputation.

He said, “I have never stopped Oluchi Oparah from carrying out her duties including receiving money and signing of cheques. The electronic payment funds meant for the party are automatically transferred.

“Total summary of the money that entered into the party was N1.3 billion. We also got N800m for the campaign. I want to challenge her to make the records available where she got the sum of N3.5 billion.”

But the national treasurer’s claim about her never getting bank notifications when money enters or exits LP accounts went unanswered by the chairman.
