LASG partners with Ghana group to modify waste management

To improve the handling of solid and liquid waste in the state, the Lagos State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the renowned Ghanaian waste management company Jospong Group of Companies.

By reducing downstream pressure, our collaboration intends to construct a Material Recovery Facility that will drastically reduce the quantity of waste that ends up in landfills.

In Alausa, Ikeja, on Monday, Dr. Joseph Agyepong, the Executive Chairman of Jospong Group, and Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab finalized the agreement on behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Through a post on his official X account Wahab announced the agreement and emphasized how important it is to advance the transformation of waste management methods in Lagos.

“I am delighted to announce that the Lagos State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a Ghana Waste Management company JONSPONG Group of Companies on treatments of solid and liquid wastes in the state and to establish a Material Recovery Facility to reduce downstream pressure (waste disposal volume) at landfills,” he tweeted.

The commissioner declared that in order to reduce garbage congestion in important places like markets, the Memorandum of Understanding with Jospong Group will replace permanent transfer loading stations with mobile ones. Lagos faces difficulty in managing its solid and liquid garbage due to its enormous population, bustling markets, and waste generated by industry. This effort aims to address these issues.

Wabab added that the collaboration intends to improve Lagos’s livability by creating extensive waste management infrastructure to meet present and future needs. Technology, advocacy, enforcement, and the advancement of a circular economy through waste-to-energy, recycling, composting, and reuse programs will be the main areas of attention.

In line with Sustainable Development Goal No. 6, which promotes access to clean water and sanitation, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group, stressed throughout his speech that environmental sanitation is essential to public health and not only a convenience.

Dr. Agyepong announced the provision of 2,000 tricycles to help the trash management activities of the Association of trash Managers in Lagos, as well as his commitment to provide waste collectors with the tools they need to increase their productivity.

The goal of the collaboration with the Lagos State Government and its departments, LAWMA and the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO), he clarified, is to significantly enhance the waste management procedures in the state.
