Senate Sitting Delayed As Blackout Hits National Assembly Complex

Senators went without power on Tuesday while they awaited the restoration of power to the National Assembly building in order to start their session.

Social media users’ responses to a video that showed the red chamber in partial darkness has circulated the online space.

PUNCH NEWS on their X handle reported that after electricity was restored a few minutes later, Senate President Godswill Akpabio started plenary.

While work was being done to address the issue, Akpabio apologized for the outage and the heat in the Chamber and revealed that approximately nine offices were still without power.

Recall that in February the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company threatened that it will disconnect electricity in the Presidential Villa and 86 Federal Government’s Ministry Department and Agencies over N47,195 billion outstanding debts as of December 2023.

While issuing a notice of disconnection to the affected MDAs, AEDC stated, “The Management of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has given a 10 days’ notice to 86 Government to pay up the N47.1bn electricity debt they owe or risk disconnection.

“The Abuja Electricity Distribution PLC is constrained to do this publication with the details of Government, Ministries, Departments and Agencies with long outstanding unpaid bills for services rendered to them through the provision of electricity supply in that our previous attempts to make them honour their obligations have not achieved the desired results.”

The firm urged the MDAs to pay up by Wednesday,  February 28th 2024 or risk being disconnected.
