Ujah laments for not scoring for Super Eagles

After spending a brief time with the men’s senior national team in 2013, former Super Eagles striker Anthony Ujah is still enjoying the high of playing for Nigeria, but he is not happy about not scoring any goals.

In a conversation with Eagles Tracker, the 33-year-old discussed his experience working under the late coach Stephen Keshi and looked back on his tenure with the national team.

“My experience with the national team, if I have to say regret but I don’t think that is the right word because I have really been blessed by football.

“But if there is any wish that I have, I wish I scored a goal for Nigeria. Because our country is one of the biggest when you talk about football in the world,” Ujah told Eagles Tracker.

“It’s a wish to have scored and even have more games and more tournaments but I’m just grateful, it was a good time with Stephen Keshi. He was an amazing coach.”

He further said that his first national team jersey was kept in his father’s house as a mark of pride.

“Wearing that shirt, my first national team jersey is still hanging in my father’s house because it’s something he sees every day and makes him really pound. It was an honour to wear that shirt. I played eight times for Nigeria.”

The former Warri Wolves striker might not have registered his name among goal scorers for Nigeria, but he was productive in the club level, which attracted him to the national U-23 team in 2011, before making his Super Eagles debut in 2013.

Prior to joining Eintracht Braunschweig in the summer of 2022, Ujah played for Liaoning Whowin in China and stints with Mainz 05, Koln, Werder Bremen, and Union Berlin in Germany. Ujah scored 91 goals in 271 games throughout his time with these teams.

He has three goals and one assist in 14 league games and 13 in 36 games across all competitions for his current club in the 2 Bundesliga.
