On Monday, the Yobe State Government announced that 564 of the 636 people who contracted meningitis in the state had recovered.

Haruna Umar, the Primary Healthcare Management Board’s Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer for the state, revealed this to the News Agency of Nigeria during an interview on Monday in Damaturu.

Wakadaily had reported about the outbreak of the disease in Yobe State which was followed by quarantining of the afflicted persons.

According to Umar, as of Monday, 564 people had entirely recovered and there had been 22 fatalities overall. He claimed that 50 people were still being monitored and cared for in isolation units.

He continued by saying that the six local government districts of Machina, Nangere, Fika, Fune, Potiskum, and Gujba had 636 cases reported.

He said the government had taken adequate measures to manage the spread of the disease around the state.

“The government has established treatment centres in the affected LGAs, including temporary isolation camps in some secondary schools.

“The government has also engaged 18 ad hoc staff, including two medical doctors, at the isolation centres, among other measures,” Umar added.

This past week, a shipment from the United Nations Children’s Fund was sent to Nigeria, making Nigeria the first nation to receive the new MenFive meningitis vaccine from the worldwide stockpile supported by the Vaccine Alliance.
