Religious leaders are being urged by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency to assist in the battle to eradicate gender-based and sexual violence in the state.

Titilola Viviour-Adeniyi, the agency’s executive secretary, made this statement on Tuesday during her welcome speech at a training session for religious leaders in the state.

She emphasized that in order to address SGBV, advocacy and group attention are required.

She said, “In the vibrant tapestry of Lagos State, our religious institutions stand as pillars of guidance and solace, offering support and counsel to communities across diverse faiths.

“Yet, amidst our noble endeavours, we are confronted with an insidious threat that undermines the very fabric of our society.

“SGBV, with its cruel tentacles, spares no one, regardless of age, class, creed, or faith. It is a scourge that demands our collective attention and unwavering commitment to combat.

“Today, we come together not merely as representatives of our respective religious institutions but as guardians of justice, compassion, and dignity.”

She clarified that the program’s objectives were to provide them the tools and information necessary to become change agents in their communities as well as to give them a greater grasp of the threat.

Viviour-Adeniyi continued, “As religious leaders and counsellors, you possess a unique platform and influence to shape attitudes, challenge norms, and promote respect for human rights.

“Together, we can instil a culture of empathy, accountability, and solidarity where survivors find support and perpetrators are held accountable.

“Let us seize this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding the sanctity of every individual, regardless of gender or background.

“Together, let us embark on this journey of enlightenment, compassion, and action, knowing that our collective efforts have the power to transform lives and create a safer, more equitable society for all.”
