Elizabeth Anyanacho wins a bronze medal in Ghana

On Tuesday, Elizabeth Anyanacho  Nigerian Taekwondo Athlete, won a gold medal at the current African Games in Ghana.

This is the first Nigeria’s taekwondo gold at the competition after Anyanacho defeated Africa’s No.1 ranked taekwondo athlete Mohammed Aya of Egypt in three rounds to win the gold medal in Accra, an upgrade to the bronze she won in Rabat, Morocco at the 2019 African Games.

Elizabeth, started her day by defeating W. Zaboure of Burundi in the quarter-finals and then in the semi-finals, she defeacted Morocco’s Salih Sofia in another three rounds on the mat.

The 24-year old athlete,  earlier  qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games in France, she took her time to study her opponent  very well. And regardless losing the first round, she came back fully to win the second and third rounds to claim the gold.

Chinazum Nwosu, during the 2019 African Games champion has failed to retain her gold medal after losing her semi-finals match to Bouma Coulibaly of Ivory Coast in the 53kg weight category.

Nwosu, whom Nigerians rated as No.1 in her category, started brightly defeating Omolara Eunice of Ghana in her quarter-final sessions proceeding to the semi finals.

coulibaly,  withstanding everything Nwosu threw at her to win the first two rounds in the semi-finals which sealed the victory for the Ivorian.

Florence Okafor, defeated Boukar Assaine of Chad in the Round of 16, before losing out to Fatima Ezzahra Abo of Morocco in the women’s +73Kg category, at the quarter-finals.

Following her win, Elizabeth, is more determined to give her very best at the Paris Olympics, where she anticipates a tough outing.

“I have really tough opponents and I know they are training hard. I don’t envisage having any easy matches in Paris. But I will do my best and fight with all I have,” she said.

“Putting all my experiences together, I have a good feeling that I’m going to get a very positive result in Paris.”
