Reps urge NEMA to provide relief materials to rainstorm victims

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been urged by the House of Representatives to deliver relief supplies to the people, villages, and schools in the Nasarawa State localities of Akwanga/Nasarawa Eggon and Wamba Federal Constituency affected by the rainstorms as soon as possible.

The House further encouraged the federal government relief agency to move quickly to begin the rehabilitation of those impacted by the downpour and the reconstruction of the schools that were destroyed.

During the day’s plenary session, which was chaired by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, the lower legislative chamber decided upon a resolution of urgent significance brought up by Hon. Jeremiah Umaru (APC-Nasarawa). The committee was tasked with ensuring prompt compliance.

The motion was tagged: “Urgent Call to Address the Destruction and Displacement of Schools and Communities in Akwanga/Nasarawa Eggon/Wamba Federal Constituency of Nasarawa State” by the lawmaker.

Umaru, in his presentation, noted that “on the 16th day of March, 2024, there was heavy rainstorm which resulted in significant destruction and displacement of communities and schools in Akwanga/Nasarawa Eggon/Wamba Federal Constituency of Nasarawa State.

Also, he mentioned that the downpour, which wrecked houses and schools, had left his constituents homeless, interfered with the schooling of the children in these towns, and injured some of them to the point of critical illness.

According to him, “the impact of the rainstorm is such that the displaced members of the communities are in dire need of immediate intervention in the form of medical supplies, temporary shelter and reconstructions to restore the communities to their habitable state.”

The senator acknowledged that, particularly during emergencies, it is the duty of the government to safeguard the safety and well-being of its people.

He expressed concerns, noting that “if urgent measures are not taken to address the high rate of displacements occasioned by the rainstorm, these communities will be susceptible to attacks by hoodlums and kidnappers.”
