On Thursday (today), at the Cape Coast Stadium, Nigeria and Ghana battles it out at the ongoing 2023 African Games in Ghana, for the final of the female football event.
On Monday, Nigeria secured a 2-0 win over Uganda in the first semi-finals to set up the clash, while Ghana outclassed Senegal 3-1. Substitutes Judith Okah and Chiamaka Okwuchukwu provided the goals that sent Nigeria into the final.
Nigeria is the defending champions of the women’s football event, as move to repeat their Rabat 2019 feat. Christopher Danjuma’s girls are also looking to avenge their loss in the final of the WAFU B U-20 Championship hosted by Ghana last year, in which the host nation edged out the Falconets in the final in Kumasi to win the regional title.
However, Christopher girls have been commanding in Cape Coast, scoring eight goals in three matches without any handover, On the other hand, Ghana have scored seven and handover three.
“It is an opportunity to retain our gold medal from the last edition in Morocco and we will do everything to win and make Nigerians happy,” Danjuma told NFF Media.
“In as much as we are not thinking about revenge, we know that we have unfinished business with Ghana. Our primary objective is to retain our gold medal in the African Games and by doing that, we would have sorted out the unfinished business.”
Yusuf Basigi, Danjuma’s Ghanaian replacement is hoping to work on his difficult defence before the clash with their archrivals.
“Due to the inconsistent nature of our back line due to injury, it makes us a bit unstable. We will go into the final to make sure it doesn’t happen as we have worked on our mistakes during training.”
The final will kick off by 9pm Nigeria time.
