Tinubu appoints former DIG as coordinator center for control of small arms

The appointment of DIG Johnson Kokumo (retired) as the new Coordinator of the National Center for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons under the Office of the National Security Adviser has been authorized by President Bola Tinubu.

On May 3, 2021, former President Muhammadu Buhari designated Major-General AM Dikko (retd.) as the pioneer Coordinator. Kokumo will succeed him.

In a statement titled “President Tinubu appoints new coordinator for the National Center for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons,” which was signed by Tinubu’s Special Advisor on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, the Presidency announced his appointment on Tuesday.

Ngelale described Kokumo as a “seasoned and accomplished law enforcement professional with over 30 years of experience in crime prevention, management, analysis, and control.”

From 2022 until 2023, he served as the deputy inspector general of police in the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department at Force Headquarters in Abuja.

According to Article 24 of the ECOWAS Convention on Small Arms and Light Weapons, this was permissible.

At the time, the Presidency said that the Center would take the role of the now-defunct Presidential Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons and function as the institutional framework for research, policy direction, and oversight of all facets of SAWs.

The establishment of NCCSALW was a component of Nigeria’s security architecture reorganization, which aimed to strengthen regional SALW control, prevention, and regulation procedures and meet new threats.
