Kogi governor mourns accident victims

Ahmed Ododo, the governor of Kogi State, conveyed empathy to the relatives of those killed in the Obajana accident.

Thirteen bus passengers lost their lives in the Sunday night collision, while two others were injured.

According to Wakadaily, the Federal Road Safety Corps claimed on Monday that in two separate car crashes in the states of Kogi and Benue, 13 people died and 21 were injured.

In the state capital of Lokoja, journalists were notified by Samuel Oyedeji, the Kogi FRSC Sector Commander, about the accident that happened in Kogi on Sunday at approximately 7:30 p.m.

According to Oyedeji, the incident happened in the Lokoja Local Government Area of the state, close to Obajana Market, on the Obajana-Lokoja Road. It involved an articulated cement truck and a commercial Sharon bus.

Upon his return to Lokoja on Monday, Ododo received a news of the disaster. He expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and pledged that the state government would support them at this difficult time.

Ododo expressed his displeasure with the disaster that transpired late on Sunday night in the Obajana market when an articulated truck collided with a passenger bus, resulting in an inferno, in a statement provided to newsmen in Lokoja on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media, Ismaila Isah.

While commiserating with the families of the victims, Ododo said, “I am disturbed that this accident resulted in the loss of lives and damage to property in the area.

“I sympathise with the families of those who lost their lives and the survivors, and I promise that we shall not abandon them in their moment of grief.”

He hailed the state’s emergency management agencies for stepping up to the occasion and handling the aftermath of the accident.

The governor urged everyone to stay away from night travel at all costs.

“Let me also commend the Federal Road Safety Commission and other agencies for their quick response, but again I want to urge Nigerians to avoid night travels and for transporters in the state to preserve passenger manifest at bus terminals to enable easy identification when there are situations like this,” the governor said.
