Pediatricians says children’s lack of response to names at 12 months might indicate sign of autism

Child health experts are stressing the importance of timely medical assessment for children displaying potential signs of autism in honor of 2024 World Autism Awareness Day. Early diagnosis and intervention play a pivotal role in managing autism, particularly through tailored behavioural and communication interventions.

Highlighting the significance of early detection and intervention for kids with autism, experts underscore key indicators like unresponsiveness to their name or a lack of eye contact.

This year’s World Autism Awareness Day focuses on ‘Empowering Autistic Voices,’ aiming to bolster support and empowerment for individuals with autism.

Global statistics indicate that one in 160 children exhibits traits of autism, with a prevalence rate of one in 88 in Nigeria. The lack of awareness and understanding frequently results in undiagnosed or misdiagnosed cases, underscoring the urgency for heightened vigilance.

Autism manifests in challenges related to communication, social interactions, and behavior, with symptoms encompassing communication difficulties, social interaction obstacles, fixation on specific interests, and repetitive behavioural patterns. Timely diagnosis, coupled with awareness and accessible therapies, serves as a lifeline for individuals with autism to lead fulfilling lives and make meaningful contributions to society.

World Autism Awareness Day occurs each year on April 2nd.
