LP declares planned NLC stakeholders meeting as void

A proposed stakeholders’ meeting of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is set to take place in Abuja on Monday, April 8. The Labour Party (LP) has referred to it as “a jamboree by drama boys” and declared it to be a nullity that true labor members should ignore.

According to a statement sent by the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the party saw an invitation letter that appeared in several media outlets and was allegedly written by some NLC members.

“This meeting being organised by some drama boys and attention-seeking personalities in the NLC is illegal as we have not authorised it, and it is not supported by any law in the land and therefore its outcome, a nullity. We are therefore calling on all genuine members of the party to disregard and shun the meeting,” the Labour Party said in the statement.

It further stated that the NLC quickly convened “an unlawful meeting of disgruntled members who are not even party members” in response to the Federal Government’s recent increase in the energy tariff, which was raised by around 300 percent. The NLC has not replied to this increase or called on its members to oppose it.

The Labour Party then demanded that security services call off the event, citing the possibility that it would turn into a public disturbance.

“We are calling on the law enforcement agencies to rise up to the occasion and abort this gathering which may likely degenerate to public nuisance,” the statement noted.

Ifoh said further, “The NLC cannot continue to claim ownership of the Labour Party because it lacks any proprietary rights over it.”
