Nutrition Experts Begin House-To-House Campaign In Lagos Community

Nutrition specialists from Lagos State University Teaching Hospital recently conducted an educational session in the Obada/Ipodo community in Lagos.

The goal of the session was to raise awareness about the significance of maintaining a nutritious and well-balanced diet to improve overall health and address issues of malnutrition.

This initiative, supported by Lagos State Governor Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, aims to help alleviate the impact of the current economic challenges facing the country.

The outreach event titled “Beyond the Table” showcased various initiatives, including nutrition assessment and education, food demonstrations, dietary discussions, nutrition awareness, incentives for caregivers, and provision of complementary foods for children and the elderly.

Ms. Titilayo Omodudu, the Head of the Dietetics & Nutrition Department at LASUTH, highlighted the initiative’s alignment with Lagos State’s food and nutrition policy, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach to address nutritional issues.

The objective of the outreach is to promote optimal nutrition across different levels of society, from households to communities to government levels. The focus is on providing adequate nutrition for vulnerable groups such as children, adolescent mothers, the elderly, and individuals with special dietary requirements.

Omodudu reiterated the government’s commitment to reducing malnutrition, particularly among children under five. She acknowledged the support of the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Adetokunbo Fabamwo, and LASUTH’s management in organizing the outreach.

Mrs. Aderemi Faleye, the Deputy Director of the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources and a member of the State Committee on Food and Nutrition, commended the Governor’s financial backing and LASUTH’s efforts in executing the impactful program.

Mrs. Adetutu Oladeinde, an Assistant Director of Nutrition at LASUTH and the hospital’s representative at the State Committee Of Food & Nutrition, emphasized the government’s comprehensive approach to nutrition by allocating a budget line to nutrition in 14 ministries.

She recognized the prevalence of hunger and malnutrition in the country and highlighted the significance of providing incentives to market women and children under five to combat malnutrition and ensure food security at the state level.

Mrs. Abiodun Apena, the Iyaoloja of Obada Market, expressed gratitude on behalf of the community for the outreach program. She emphasized the value of the initiative for the market community and encouraged everyone to apply the knowledge and skills gained from the event.
