Remi Tinubu to attend inaugural ceremony of institute of environment

The inaugural meeting of the Governing Council of the newly established Institute of Environmental Practitioners of Nigeria (IEPN) is scheduled for Tuesday. Attendees are likely to include Nigeria’s first lady, Remi Tinubu, and environment minister, Balarabe Abbas Lawal.

After former President Muhammadu Buhari signed the IEPN Bill into law on May 26, 2023, the IEPN was created.

The institute aims to promote professionalism, research, education, and action to tackle pressing environmental challenges in Nigeria, according to a press release from the presidents of the Waste Management Society of Nigeria (WAMASON), Akpabio Essien, and the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), Dr. Efegbidiki Okobia.

“The institute will serve as a hub for interdisciplinary collaboration, knowledge exchange, and innovative solutions to safeguard our planet’s health and resilience,” the statement said.

Prior to being signed into law by Okobia and Essien during their current leadership, the IEPN Bill was first proposed by the NES in 1999.

Nigeria’s endeavors to promote sustainable development nationwide and professionalize the environmental sector have reached a noteworthy turning point with the establishment of the IEPN Governing Council.
