INEC tenders documents to back Kogi governorship election

The electoral documents has been tenderd by the independent National Electoral Commission, against the Social Democratic Party and its candidate, Murtala Ajaka at the Kogi governorship petition tribunal sitting in Abuja, on Monday.

Having declared Usman Ododo of the All Progressives Congress as the winner of the poll, in the November 11, 2023, the SDP and it’s candidates decided to challenge the declaration.

Usman Ododo,  won the election with 446,237 votes while his rivals Ajaka of the SDP  scored 259,052.

Earlier On April 6, the petitioners had closed their case after calling out 25  witnesses.

During Monday’s proceedings, INEC opened their case by submitting some documents before a three-member panel of justices, led by Justice Ado Birnin-Kudu.

During the proceedings on Monday, which was led by Justice Ado Birnin-Kudu, some documents were opened by INEC before a three-member panel of justices, in submission of their case.

Some of the documents tendered on Monday by the commission’s lawyer, Uchenna Njoku include INEC Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of the Election; INEC Manuals for Electoral Officers, and INEC Form EC8C.

Others include INEC Form EC8B; INEC Form EC8E; List of Accredited Agents for SDP; List of Accredited Ward Agents; and Receipts of Payment for Forms, among others.

Justice Birnin-Kudu, after the documents were tendered, accepted them in evidence and marked them as exhibits.

Uchenna Njoku, had applied for an adjournment to enable the electoral Commission present its witnesses on the next adjourned date.

The matter was adjourned until April 16th for continuation of the hearing.

However Justice Birnin-Kudu, had earlier announced the SDP’s petition would be  concluded on May 29, as he reduced the number of days given to the respondents to present their cases alongside the filing of the final written addresses from 10 to five days.
