The Lagos State Government is implementing a comprehensive plan to revamp healthcare infrastructure and enhance the quality of services for residents.
This initiative includes constructing new medical facilities, renovating existing ones, and equipping them with modern technology.
According to the Director of Public Affairs for the State Ministry of Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, the Commissioner for Health, highlighted the importance of the ongoing projects during inspection visits to several healthcare facilities.
He emphasized the significant impact of the Massey Street Specialist Children’s Hospital in improving paediatric care, not only in Lagos but also nationwide and across Africa.
The hospital, designed with sustainable engineering principles and a focus on paediatric care, is set to become a model of excellence in the field.
“With sustainable engineering principles integrated into its design, the hospital boasts a capacity of 150 beds and a multi-level car park accommodating over 300 vehicles. Positioned as a referral centre for complex pediatric cases, the hospital is set to become a beacon of excellence in pediatric healthcare within Nigeria.” He stated.
Abayomi also highlighted the significance of renovating Somolu General Hospital to address the healthcare requirements of the increasing population.
He stated that the proposed expansion, featuring a 120-bed facility with specialized services and housing for medical staff, demonstrates the government’s dedication to offering accessible and high-quality healthcare services to all inhabitants.
He emphasized, “Recognising the increasing demand for healthcare services, particularly in densely populated areas, the Lagos State Government is revitalising Somolu General Hospital.
“The expansion project, set to transform the hospital into a modern healthcare hub, includes plans for a 120-bed facility equipped with specialized services and accommodation for medical personnel. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to providing accessible and quality healthcare services to all residents.”
Discussing the LASUTH Resident Doctors’ Quarters, the commissioner underscored the state government’s efforts to improve the well-being of medical staff and tackle the housing issues encountered by resident doctors.
He added that the 10-story structure will offer convenient living quarters for doctors undergoing specialized training, thereby aiding in the retention of proficient healthcare practitioners.
“In a bid to address the accommodation challenges faced by medical personnel, especially resident doctors, the government is constructing residential quarters adjacent to the House Officers quarters in the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.
“The 10-story building will provide comfortable living spaces for doctors undergoing specialized training, thereby enhancing their welfare and contributing to the retention of skilled healthcare professionals,” Abayomi mentioned.
Additionally, the commissioner emphasized the importance of Ojo General Hospital, which, despite facing technical difficulties, is steadily progressing towards becoming a vital healthcare provider for the surrounding communities.
He disclosed that once completed, the hospital’s 288-bed capacity and ample staff accommodations will ensure comprehensive healthcare services for residents in the area.
Furthermore, Engr. Adekunle Olayinka, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Works, praised the commitment of the contractors and consultants working on these transformative projects.
He reiterated the government’s promise to provide sustainable and strong healthcare infrastructure, placing a strong emphasis on meeting strict standards and specifications.
Olayinka highlighted the significance of effective governance and collaboration among agencies, particularly seen in projects like the Somolu General Hospital initiative.
He restated the government’s determination to deliver top-quality infrastructure through regular inspections and quality control measures.
