IOM Praises Nigeria For Implementing Action Plan To Tackle Displacement

Laurent De Boeck, Chief of Mission for the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in Nigeria, has praised the implementation of State Action Plans (SAP) aimed at finding lasting solutions to internal displacement in Nigeria.

The SAP initiative, launched on May 27, 2024, with Vice President Kashim Shettima in attendance, has been adopted by the northeastern states of Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe.

De Boeck emphasized IOM’s dedication to supporting efforts that enhance the well-being of vulnerable populations, aligning with the organization’s mission to promote humane and orderly migration.

He stated, “As an organisation driving solutions to displacement situations, we are committed to supporting the transition towards comprehensive, evidence-based, long-term initiatives that focus on helping people rebuild their lives and reconstruct the social fabric.

“The proactive approach taken by the BAY state (Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe) governments underscores the shared commitment of the government authorities, humanitarian partners, and relevant stakeholders to mitigate the impact of displacement and uphold the rights and well-being of affected individuals and communities.”

De Boeck declared that the implementation of the State Action Plans (SAP) showcases the states’ unwavering dedication to addressing the needs of vulnerable populations and finding durable solutions to the long-standing displacement crisis in Northeast Nigeria.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) emphasized that internal displacement remains Nigeria’s most pressing humanitarian issue, with over 2.3 million individuals currently affected, including internally displaced persons, returnees  (former IDPs) , and refugees across the region, highlighting the urgency for sustainable solutions.

“The adoption of these action plans marks a significant milestone in advancing efforts to empower displaced persons to rebuild their lives sustainably, focusing on durable housing, sustainable livelihoods, and social cohesion,” it noted.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) reaffirmed its commitment to saving lives and supporting the government’s efforts to address the complex challenges of displacement.

To achieve this, IOM will promote sustainable solutions that include return, local integration, and resettlement, as outlined in its contribution to sustainable solutions for IDPs and affected communities in Nigeria.

The organization stressed the importance of local integration in finding lasting solutions for IDPs, and is providing technical guidance to the Adamawa State government for developing the State Action Plan (SAP).

IOM reiterated its unwavering support to the Nigerian government and local authorities in implementing these action plans, offering technical expertise, resources, and assistance to ensure their successful implementation.
