Strike: Comprehensive Agreements Between Tinubu’s Administration And Labor Leaders

On Monday, June 3rd, a critical discussion took place between the federal government and labour unions at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, in Abuja, to resolve the ongoing strike related to the new minimum wage and electricity tariff increase.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, subsequently shared the meeting’s resolutions through the ministry’s social media platform, formerly known as Twitter.

The statement revealed that the parties involved came to the following understandings and mutually agreed upon the following terms:

1. Dedication to Increased Minimum Wage: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is dedicated to setting a National Minimum Wage surpassing N60,000.

2. Daily Tripartite Committee Meetings: The Tripartite Committee will meet daily for the following week to conclude on an acceptable National Minimum Wage.

3. Labor Union Assemblies: Organized labor will promptly hold meetings with their individual groups to review the government’s pledge.

4. Worker Protection: No employee will face repercussions for participating in the industrial action.

The agreement was endorsed by Mohammed Idris and Honorable Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, representing the federal government.

Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Festus Osifo, the President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), signed on behalf of organized labor.

It’s important to highlight that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) halted the indefinite nationwide strike for a week on Tuesday to allow the Tripartite Committee on the New Minimum Wage to finalize negotiations.
