Ogun And Community Leaders Collaborate To Address Gender-Based Violence

In an effort to address the increasing cases of gender-based violence in Ogun State, the government has joined forces with community leaders in the Ogun East Senatorial District to enhance awareness and advocacy on the issue.

During a sensitisation programme organized by the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and Social Development for community gatekeepers in Ijebu-Ode, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Women Affairs, Mrs Ayotunde Lawal, reiterated the government’s dedication to supporting programs that promote a safer environment for everyone.

She stressed the significance of collaborating with community leaders to combat violence against women, girls, and boys, and assured that the state government is actively working to enhance the well-being of its residents.

“As a government, we will continue to give encouragement and support to all our gatekeepers within each community, whose mission tallies with our agenda of ‘Building Our Future Together’ and making life more meaningful for citizens, irrespective of their geographical location, gender, religious, or political affiliation,” Lawal mentioned.

Mrs. Wonuola Kassim, Director of Women Empowerment Services, stressed that community leaders are vital in mobilizing their communities and play a crucial role in reducing gender-based violence (GBV) through their support and collaboration.

Meanwhile, Chief Adeola Alausa, Chairman of Olorituns, Ijebu-Ode Council, commended the state government for organizing the program, calling it timely and essential in the fight against GBV. He urged for a united effort and ongoing government support to combat social vices in society.

During her presentation on ‘Understanding Gender-Based Violence and Response’, Mrs. Mariam Afolabi, Gender Vocal Officer of the Ministry, outlined the various types of violence, such as physical, mental, and psychological abuse. She highlighted the devastating impact of sexual assaults on survivors’ emotions, leading to feelings of anger, fear, and sadness, and encouraged both community leaders and survivors to speak out.
