Task Force stray bullet kills commuter in Lagos: police denied having hand in the death

A male passenger inside a commercial bus on Monday, was hit by a stray bullet from policemen attacked to the Lagos State Task Force, at Second Rainbow bus stop, on the Apapa-Oshodi expressway, Lagos. The young man was said to be coming from Abia State to Lagos for the first time, to see one of his relatives who were in the hospital. Before the unfortunate incident happened.

It was gathered that the policemen who were trying to impound some motorbikes were resisted by the riders, causing the policemen to fire some shots, apparently to disperse the commercial motorcyclists, who were over 100. In the process, a stray bullet hit a male passenger in his 20s, right inside a commercial bus, on the other side of the road, other passengers who sustained injuries were rushed to hospital.

However, the Lagos State task Force has denied having a hand in the death of the young man.

According to the Chairman of the agency, CSP Shola Jejeloye, in a statement signed by  the Director,  Press & Public Affairs, Lagos State Taskforce, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, yesterday, said  he personally led the operation on Monday.

The statement read, “The attention of the Lagos State Taskforce has been drawn to a purported claim making rounds that officials of the Agency were involved in a shoot out at Second Rainbow Bus Stop in Amuwo Odofin, during an enforcement for compliance exercise yesterday(Monday) targeted at okada operators which left one unidentified person dead.

Noting that, “Activities of the Lagos State Task Force are carried out with the highest degree of civility and caution because we are dealing with human lives in our operations. We have been to Second Rainbow more than three times this year to carry out enforcement operations and have never recorded any injuries, talk more of loss of life.

“There was no provocation at all during yesterday’s exercise. So the claim that we fired live ammunition at okada operators is completely false,” he said.
