Katsina unveils plans for participatory governance through OGP

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda of Katsina State has announced the state’s intention to join the Open Government Partnership (OGP), an international initiative promoting transparency, accountability, and citizen engagement in governance.

Expressing his commitment to fostering good governance, Governor Radda directed the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning to initiate the process of Katsina State’s membership in the OGP. This decision reflects the governor’s vision for a more inclusive and accountable government that embraces public sector reforms.

In a statement issued by Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed, Radda’s Chief Press Secretary, he noted that the governor has directed the state Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning to initiate the process of joining the OGP.

Our decision to join the OGP is a testament to our uninterrupted vision for good governance. It aligns perfectly with our promise to establish the Katsina State Bureau of Public Sector Reform, which is contained in our “Building Your Future Strategic Policy.”

Continuing, Mohammed stressed, “We have already taken significant steps towards reform by establishing the Public Administration Reform Department in Katsina State. This department is tasked with sustaining ongoing reforms and introducing new ones to enhance service delivery to our citizens. Joining the OGP is the next logical step in our journey towards a more open and accountable government.”

As part of the accession process, the governor has instructed the establishment of a State Steering Committee comprising equal representation from the government and civil society. This committee will oversee the integration of OGP principles, coordinate activities, and liaise with the national secretariat to formalize Katsina State’s participation.

“We are not just joining the OGP; we are embracing its principles wholeheartedly.

“Our administration is committed to empowering citizens, fighting corruption, and harnessing new technologies to strengthen governance. We believe that by working together, the government and the civil society can build a brighter future for Katsina State.

In lieu of the foregoing, the Governor has directed the relevant ministries to prepare a draft state action plan and independent report mechanism templates, demonstrating the state’s commitment to meeting OGP standards,” the CPS further pointed out.
