Lagos cult clash: Community panics after cultists kill NURTW boss

A Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Sulaimon Onaolapo, popularly known as Ariku, was killed on Sunday during a cult clash at Mile-12, in the Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State.

Sulaimon was macheted to death by assailants on Sunday evening, as seen in a few seconds video which trended on social media.

Residents alleged he was a brute, who alongside his boys were terrorising the area before his untimely death.

The incident, however, caused anxiety as resident in the community, expressed fear over a reprisal by Sulaimon loyalists while speaking with The Punch on Monday.

Mary Olayemi, said she and her family members were just leaving the church on Sunday when they heard gunshots.

“When we heard the gunshots, we ran into a compound and when all was clear, we saw that Onaolapo (Ariku) had been killed with machetes.

“We heard that they had been looking for him and around 12pm yesterday, that they tracked him and got him. The fights among NURTW people have been happening for some time. We are afraid that they might continue this violence next week.”

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Superintendent of Police (SP) Benjamin Hudenyin, said: “No arrest has been made regarding the matter, but order has been restored.

“We can’t confirm if he was killed by rival cult members, until the conclusion of our investigation.”
