Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has gained backing from Cardi B after skillfully dodging a questionable inquiry from a journalist regarding the American rapper.
In a recently circulated video on X, Ayra Starr was approached by a TMZ reporter who inquired about Cardi B’s memory lapse regarding the designer of her 2024 Met Gala attire during the red carpet event.
“So Cardi B just went after the former Vogue director Gilbert. The dress that she wore to the Met Gala took months to make and she didn’t remember the name of the designers who made the dress,” the reporter said.
Starr quickly interrupted, emphasizing that nervousness might be the cause.
“It happens sometimes because of the nerves,” she said.
The reporter further said, “She was supposed to stand and pose on the podium and that there was a lot going on. But you’ve been on a lot of red carpets, is it disrespectful not to know the designer’s name?”
Afterwards, the vocalist laughed, and lifted her hands and said, “I don’t know to be honest but I feel like nerves would definitely make you forget. Love to Cardi B though, always. So I don’t know.”
Cardi B reacted to the video on X, showing her support for Ayra Star and emphasizing that the media platform was attempting to be sneaky.
Her replied, “Ahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa try to be messy and mission failed…also why put a superstar like Ayra in such a weird and uncomfortable position?”
After facing criticism for not remembering the name of the designer, Sensen Lii, who created her dress and mistakenly referring to him as “Asian,” the rapper received further backlash.
A former Vogue director pointed out that Sensen Lii is actually Chinese, not just Asian.
In response, Cardi B created a video to clarify the situation, emphasizing that she did not intend to be racist.
“I kind of forgot how to pronounce the designer’s name because his name is a little bit complicated…My mind was just racing,” she said.
