Deputy president William Ruto, has emerged winner of the just concluded presidential election in Kenya, the head of the country’s election body announced on Monday.
According to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), chairman Wafula Chebukati said Ruto had won almost 7.18 million votes (50.49 percent) against 6.94 million (48.85 percent) for his rival Raila Odinga in the August 9 vote.
Ruto led a tight presidential race against opposition a former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga.
Despite several commissioners rejecting the results. Ruto has won the race to be the fifth president of the East African nation.
In his speech, President-elect Ruto thanked the electoral commission for overseeing the election.
“It is a wonderful evening… all sovereign power belongs to the people of Kenya,” Mr Ruto said, calling Mr Chebukati a “hero”.
