Early Life & Education
Chris Rock was born on February 7th, 1965 in South Carolina, United States to the family of Julius Rock and Rosalie.
His family later moved to Brooklyn, New York. His father was a truck driver and newspaper deliveryman before he died in 1988 while his mother was a teacher and social worker.
Chris is the oldest child in a family of seven children which includes six boys and a girl. His younger brothers, Jordan, Tony, and Kenny are all into the entertainment business.
Chris Rock was a student at James Madison High School, although he dropped out of the school, he later secured a General Educational Development (GED).
Career
Chris Rock developed a passion for comedy with influences from the likes of Flip Wilson, Woody Allen, Rodney Dangerfield, Eddy Murphy, and Richard Pryor.
His comedy is always centered around subjects involving celebrities, romance, music, and politics.
Chris began his career as a stand-up comedian in 1984 while also delving into some minor roles in acting in films such as I’m Gonna Git You Sucka and the TV series Miami Vice.
He became part of the Sketch comedy series, Saturday Live Night from 1990 to 1993. He dropped his first comedy album, Born Suspect in 1991.
He featured in his first HBO comedy special titled Big Ass Jokes as part of HBO Comedy Half-hour in 1994.
He cemented his place in the comedy space with his second special, 1996’s Bring the Pain. He also had two more HBO Comedy Specials: Bigger & Blacker in 1999 and Never Scared in 2004.
Chris had supporting roles in films such as Boomerang, New Jack City, and Beverly Hills Ninja. He also made appearances in the comedy film Dogma alongside the likes of Matt Damon, George Carlin, Salma Hayek, Bem Affleck, and Alan Rickman.
He wrote the film Down to Earth alongside his friend Louis C.K and also produced and starred in the C.K directed film, Pootie Tang, in 2001.
He directed and starred in the film Too Five in 2014 and also showed up in Sofia Coppola’s Christmas musical special, A Very Murray Christmas alongside Bill Murray.
Chris starred in the comedy film, Dolemite is my Name in 2019 alongside Eddie Murphy and also in a reboot of the Saw franchise, Spiral in 2021.
He eventually rose to fame for his work as the executive producer and narrator of the comedy series Everybody Hates Chris. He has a production company called Chris Rock Enterprises and he is the producer of the series Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell.
