Dr. Tomi Coker, the Ogun State Health Commissioner, implored nursing graduates of the Ogun College of Nursing Sciences to remember their roots and the country that supported their education, even as they consider pursuing opportunities abroad.
At the institution’s convocation ceremony, she acknowledged the challenges in the country but emphasized the critical role the healthcare system has played in shaping their careers.
Dr. Coker praised the graduates as among the best in Nigeria, urging them to apply their exceptional skills, innovative thinking, and unwavering dedication to benefit Ogun State and the nation.
“As nurses and midwives, you are the backbone of our healthcare system. Your role is critical, not only in providing care but in leading change, advocating for patients and driving improvements in health outcomes.
“The knowledge and skills you have acquired are invaluable. I urge you to continue seeking opportunities for growth and development.
“Pursue further education, engage in research and embrace new technologies and methodologies,” she urged.
Dr. Tomi Coker expressed her appreciation to Governor Dapo Abiodun for his steadfast support and investments in nursing education, recognizing his commitment to achieving accreditation for all state-owned nursing and midwifery schools and transitioning them to the collegiate system.
Meanwhile, Dr. Omotade Sodimu, the College Provost, highlighted the institution’s rich history as one of the oldest tertiary institutions in the state, contributing significantly to health education.
She emphasized the college’s dedication to producing highly skilled nurses and midwives, essential for enhancing public health and well-being.
Additionally, Sodimu announced that the first batch of students admitted through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination would soon matriculate, paving the way for nursing students to participate in the National Youth Service Corps program.
Dr. Sodimu thanked the Commissioner for Health for her significant contributions to the college’s achievement.
Meanwhile, Miss Busola Yakubu, the top graduating student, encouraged her fellow graduates to serve as ambassadors of the transformative power of education, utilizing their knowledge, skills, and experience to drive positive change.
She reminded them to hold dear the values and principles that shaped their personal and professional growth. Yakubu emphasized the importance of embracing lifelong learning, creativity, and compassion to make a meaningful difference in their communities and the world.
“We must use our knowledge and skills to break barriers, challenge the status quo and drive innovation. We must be the leaders, thinkers and problem-solvers that our world needs,” she highlighted.
