Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos State Government says current efforts to enforce the state’s environmental laws are yielding favorable results.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, said this at a recently held Justice Reform Summit 2024 organized by the state Ministry of Justice.
In renewed efforts to prevent flooding, ministry officials have recently intensified measures against buildings built along drainage canals and also cleared public places of slums, which harbor criminals and miscreants.
In a post on Thursday on X, the commissioner emphasized the importance of upholding the law and “ensuring compliance without fear or favour.”
“I cited the enforcement of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017 and the positive effect it has had on our environment over the past few weeks of the rainy season in flood-prone areas.
“The Lagos State Justice system is the envy of other states for the various landmark and innovative achievements it has recorded over the years.
“However, being the economic centre of Nigeria, there are real and new challenges to address; hence, this summit where we explored the diverse perspectives on enhancing the administration of civil justice for economic growth and investment protection with a special focus on environmental protection and economic development in the state,” Wahab said.
