FCT police command thwarted child trafficking plot, rescue minors

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command has foiled a child trafficking plot, rescuing five minors from the clutches of suspected traffickers.

In a statement by SPJosephine Adeh, Police Public Relations Officer, FCT Command,  two female suspects, were arrested by the operatives, Kulu Dogonyaro and Elizabeth Ojah, on April 27, 2024, at about 8:00 p.m. at Kagini Junction, Abuja.

It was said that the suspects were arrested while attempting to convey the five children into the Federal Capital Territory.

“The suspects, who initially attempted to escape arrest from Sokoto police operatives, were finally apprehended by our eagle-eyed officers in Abuja,” Adeh said.

The rescued children, whose ages range from 6 to 12 years old, have been handed over to the Sokoto State Police Command for further investigation and reunification with their families.

“We are working closely with our counterparts in Sokoto to ensure that the children are safely returned to their loved ones,” said CP Benneth C. Igweh, Commissioner of Police, FCT Command.

He adviced parents and guardians to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police immediately.

The police commissioner reiterated the command’s commitment to combating child trafficking and other crimes in the FCT. “We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of all residents, especially our children,” he emphasized

The two suspects are currently in police custody and will be charged to court after the completion of investigations.

However, residents were also instructed by the FCT command, to remain vigilant and report any form of suspicious activities, ensuring that the police will continue to work diligently to ensure the safety and security of all.
