Jane Birkin is a Franco-British singer and actress who gained international fame for her decade long career in the entertainment industry, she is reported to have passed on at 76 by French media.
As reported by BMF TV, the actress who lent her name to popular designer handbag brand Birkin, was found died at her home by her caregiver on Sunday.
The death of Jean Birkin has geared lots of reactions from her fans, mostly in the United Kingdom and France, the president of France Emmauel Macron has made a comment on her death
President Macron described the late Birkin as an icon.
“Because she embodied freedom, because she sang the most beautiful words of our language, Jane Birkin was a French icon.
A complete artist, her voice was as sweet as her engagements were fiery. She bequeaths us tunes and images that will never leave us.” He tweeted.
Rima Abdul Malak, French minister of culture also paid tribute to the late Birkin:”The most French of Britons is gone.
“Jane B was mischief, impertinent elegance, the never-outdated emblem of an entire era, a murmuring voice that remains our idol.
“A woman of heart, committed, whose disappearance leaves us alone In Babylone,” she said making reference to one of her song.
Jean Birkin spent most of her career in the French cinema.
She was born on the 14th of December 1946 in London, as reported by The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
She has been a resident of France since the late 60’s, Birkin was known as l’Anglaise préférée des Français (France’s favourite English woman).
Birkin pursued a solo career while releasing several albums, she sang in both French and English, and her notable acting credits including Agatha Christie’s “Death On The Nile and Evil Under The Sun”.
Birkin was awarded the Order of the British Empire(OBE) in 2001,a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service.
She was the inspiration behind the Hermes Birkin handbag which is now one of the most luxurious handbag in the world.
Lots of celebrities and prominent people pride themselves in owning a Birkin bag, some of them include,former US first lady Melania Trump, rapper Cardi B, pop star-turned fashion designer Victoria Beckham and reality star Kim Kardashian.
French media also reported that the late Birkin had suffered from many health issues which kept away from the entertainment scene, including a mild stroke in 2021 that led to the cancellation of her shows, and a broken shoulder recently in 2023.
