Seun Sean Jimoh, a popular actor in Nollywood, has criticized the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) for unfairly targeting celebrities.
In a post on his Instagram page, he pointed out that while 70% of Nigerians are guilty of misusing the country’s currency, only celebrities seem to face punishment. He questioned why there is no evidence of anyone being caught on video spraying money during the period when the law was in effect and now being arrested.
Jimoh emphasized that celebrities are also citizens and argued that singling them out for cultural reforms is both sinister and disregards the mental well-being of Nigerian citizens.
“So no civil rights group can challenge the prosecution of spraying Naira? A long imbibed cultural norm, a practice that is as old as the country itself and has deeply rooted cultural imprints. I understand wanting to curb the transactional sale of Naira for Naira at parties, but to say people should stop spraying money at parties is almost at loggerheads with our deeply rich partying culture! There just be way around”.
It looks like scapegoats are being selected to send a message to the general populace. but then, is it unfair that certain people are being selected for a crime almost 70 % of Nigerians or more are guilty of with overwhelming video evidence all over the internet?! Why isn’t anyone ever caught on video spraying money between the time the law has been in effect and now being arrested ?! Why celebrities? Celebrities and citizens too! This scapegoat approach to cultural reforms is quite sinister and lacks any concern for the mental health of the Nigerian citizens”.
He criticized the double standards of how many government officials, ministers, and internet fraudsters freely spend money every day without being arrested, while the commission focuses on targeting Bobrisky and judging him morally.
This comes shortly after it was announced that the EFCC is planning to charge socialite Cubana Chief Priest for mishandling and spraying money at a social event.
Which is against the Central Bank Act, Cubana Chief Priest is scheduled to appear in court on April 17.
Two weeks ago, Bobrisky was arrested by the EFCC for the same offense and pleaded guilty, asking for another chance to use his platform to educate his followers about money spraying.
However, the judge did not excuse his actions and sentenced him to 6 months in jail without the option of a fine.
