Kano court gives ‘Good Friday’ as deadline to kill noisy cockerel

After receiving a complaint from a neighbor that the frequent crowing prevents him from sleeping, a court in Kano gave a man until Friday to kill his cockerel.

Magistrate Halima Wali on Tuesday “heard that Malam Yusuf’s bird deprived the neighbourhood of their deserved rest and declared the cockerel a nuisance.

However, Yusuf told the court that he had bought the bird to celebrate Good Friday and pleaded with the court to allow him keep the bird until the Christian holy day before killing it for a family feast.

Judge Wali heeded to his plea but warned him against allowing the fowl roam the area and disturb residents.

She also asked him to ensure he slaughtered the bird on Friday as promised, or face a penalty from the court.”
