In an act to foster development in the educational sector, the Lagooz Schools, Agege, Lagos, has awarded N35.7m worth scholarships to 10 indigents students who performed excellently well in its Mathematics competition.
On Thursday, Mr Yomi Otubela, the Proprietor, Lagooz School disclosed this while presenting the awards to the 10 best primary school student, stating that the scholarships was meant to sponsor the secondary school education of indigent children.
The Lagooz Schools Mathematics Scholarship was also the seventh edition and the learners competed in mathematic and other subjects, after which they were screened alongside their parents to ascertain their financial status.
While explaining the purpose of setting up the scholarship, he said, “The aim of this scholarship is to assist the Federal Government to reduce out-of-school-children from the streets. We gave 10 students now; we hope to give more in soon. And for us here, parents can walk in here and tell us their challenges and we will help according to our ability. Likewise, some of us have had bad experience growing up and challenges of going to a standard school, so we feel it will be good to assist the children who are now in similar situation access quality education.”
Yomi stated that every child was valuable, saying parents and teachers should not downgrade any child.
“Every child is valuable, no child Is dull and all children are born to be great. Don’t stereotype any child. A child who is not good academically can be good in other skills. It is left for the school, teacher, or parents to discover.”
The mathematics teacher, The Jannah Sprout School, Egbeda, Lagos, Mrs Khadija Abubakar, who presented six children for the competition and five of them won scholarships advised, “In mathematics you need to start from foundation and take them accordingly. You will move to the next stage, engage them in competition by the time they do a lot of competitions they will get used to the questions, we use a lot of text books, we teach them in details. Teachers should dedicate their time, put in their best and always pray to God when teaching. They should also work with parents these parts you can’t cover alone. The parents are needed.”
