Lagos chapter vows to host best sporting event in NAWIS Games

Ahead of the 2024 NAWIS Games, Tayo Popoola, Chairperson, Association of Nigeria Women in Sports, Lagos chapter, says Lagos will host one of the best sports events.

This declaration was made by Popoola during the press briefing held at the Conference Hall, Rowe Park Sports Centre, Yaba Lagos on Thursday.

The regional event involving seven states is scheduled to hold from April 18 to 22 across three different centres in the state.

Speaking at the event’s press briefing on Thursday, Popoola said, “NAWIS came with a programme that involves different sports and we felt the need to add value to the society, especially sports involving women.

“We have seven sports to start with, but as time goes on we will be expanding the number of sports. This is going to be one of the best sporting events that even the Ministry of Sports will be proud of. Since Lagos is the centre of excellence, this is why we are starting the NAWIS Games here.”

She added, “One of the people that challenged us was the cricket federation because while we were thinking and planning, we approached the president of the federation and he gave us the go-ahead and we were delighted.

“We can agree that most of the athletes bringing glory to Nigeria are women and we feel if we do more and develop a platform that will engage them even more, we can discover more talents and they will continue to make us proud and that is why NAWIS has come up with the beautiful and fantastic idea of having the first edition of NAWIS Games in Lagos because the state is known for good performance and having the event here is just celebrating what we are known for.”
