Lagos Govt Calls for responsible mining practices to foster environmental sustainability

The Lagos State government has urged all miners and dredgers to mindfully indulge in safe and healthy practices in order to build a more sustainable environment.

Following a statement from the state Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources stating that it had commenced the process of revamping the mineral resources sector to streamline mining and dredging activities with the status of Lagos State as a mega city.

Speaking at a stakeholders meeting held during the weekend at Adeyemi Bero Auditorium,  Alausa, Lagos State, on the theme “Revamping the Mineral Resources Sector in Relation to Mega City Status of Lagos” Mr. Ogunleye, Commisioner for Energy and Mineral Resources.

Ogunleye emphasized the need for miners and dredgers to carryout their duties within the purview of the laid down regulations.

Also, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Energy and Mineral Resources Mr. Abiola Olowu said, “We must recognise the imperative of environmental stewardship and conservation in the pursuit of our development goals. The ecological integrity of Lagos is not negotiable, and we must take decisive action to mitigate the adverse impacts of mining activities on our land and water.

“Through responsible mining practices, land reclamation initiatives, and investments in clean technologies, we can safeguard our natural heritage for future generations while harnessing the full potential of our mineral wealth.”

Baring in mind that the state government has vowed to prosecute illegal miners and dredgers.
