The Lagos State Fire Service has declared that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will unveil its inaugural International Fire Safety Conference organized for June 25 to June 27, 2024, at the Balmoral Convention Centre, Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island.
With the theme “Stakeholders Collaboration: A Panacea to Incessant Fire Disasters in Lagos,” the conference aims to bring together various stakeholders to address the increasing incidents of fire disasters in the state.
This was contained in a statement on Monday, by the agency’s director, Margaret Adeseye.
Adeseye said over the years, the state fire service had received distress calls which were rising significantly, from 1,195 in 2021 to 2,537 in 2023.
It was reported that an inferno that took place at Dosumu Market on the Lagos Island earlier in April which killed a person and left several injured.
Over 14 buildings were burnt down, while four structures also collapsed. Due to the incident, the governor ordered the closure of the market for proper investigation and to conduct integrity tests on the buildings.
Adeseye in the statement said, “Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will inaugurate the event, emphasising the importance of leveraging cutting-edge technology to propel Lagos into a 21st-century economy.
“This conference will serve as a catalyst for proactive measures to mitigate fire disasters and protect our communities.
“On a final note, the conference pledges not to be merely another talk-shop, rather, it commits to implementing policies and resolutions derived from the forum to address fire safety effectively.”
