Miscreants who were occupying the pedestrian bridge in Ikota, Eti-Osa Local administration Area, have been removed by the Lagos State administration.
This was revealed on X on Wednesday by the state commissioner for environment and water resources, Tokunbo Wahab, using his account @tokunbo_wahab.
Wahab said, “Miscreants sleeping on the pedestrian bridge in Ikota have all been dislodged and the bridge cleaned. Constant monitoring will be adopted to ensure the sanity and safety of the pedestrian bridge users.”
In addition, he advised the locals to utilize the pedestrian bridges and issued a warning that “crossing the highway where there is a pedestrian bridge is an offence.”
The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps, also referred to as KAI, made public on Tuesday how 17 criminals were caught after damaging property on pedestrian bridges and were found guilty by a Lagos Magistrates’ Court.
According to an official statement from the agency, the offenders were apprehended for transforming pedestrian bridges in Lagos into sleeping areas and purposefully damaging the polycarbonate roofing sheets that are intended to shield pedestrians from sunlight and precipitation when they use the bridges for safety purposes rather than to cross roads.
LAGESC spokeswoman Ajayi Lukman claims that the arrested individuals were given a one-month jail sentence without the opportunity to pay a fine.
Following the warning issued out by the commisoner and the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps to residents against crossing the highway, during the early hours of today, some perpetrators were caught in the act and arrested on the spot.
Wahab once again revealed this on his official X handle, he said “After several warnings by the officials of @LAGESCOfficial (KAI) to use the pedestrian bridge, 13 persons were arrested at about 08.30 this morning for not using the pedestrian bridge at Oshodi Oke.
They have been charged to court for prosecution.”
