The Lagos State government has started dredging in the Ikorodu area, focusing on the main waterway in Awobo Estate, in response to flooding fears.
Leading the charge in preventing a possible calamity and guaranteeing the security of the local populace is the Drainage Maintenance Department of the state Ministry of Environment.
Tokunbo Wahab, the state commissioner for environment and water resources, announced this on Sunday via a post on X handle.
Wahab wrote, “Operatives of the Drainage Maintenance Department from @LasgMOE today (Sunday) continued with the cleaning/de-flooding, maintenance dredging and evacuation of silts from Awobo Estate Primary Channel, Igbogbo, Ikorodu, to prevent flooding in the axis.”
Many Lagos regions were already flooded on Sunday due to a downpour, and drivers were navigating the roads in Ogba, Iyana Iba, and other locations.
Rainfall-induced flash floods in October of last year impacted traffic on the Ikorodu Road.
Floods impacting traffic from the Onipanu Bus Stop on both sides of the street were seen by pedestrians. Some cars at the Obanikoro Bus Stop location were submerged in the flood, while other cars were parked there, waiting for the water to recede.
Around the same time, some people in the Rofo community on 4th Avenue, off Femi Atewolara Street in Ikorodu, bemoaned the area’s inadequate drainage, which had resulted in a deep and extensive cut on the road.
