The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital has introduced a new program, the Advanced Professional Diploma in Hospital Management, aimed at improving healthcare management in the country. This program will equip healthcare professionals with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively manage hospitals and other healthcare facilities.
During the official launch event at LASUTH, the Chief Medical Director, Prof Adetokunbo Fabamwo, highlighted the importance of the diploma program in addressing the current limitations that prevent hospital administrators from advancing beyond level 14 without a professional diploma. The program seeks to enhance expertise in healthcare administration and bridge the gap in healthcare management.
The CMD elaborated “LASUTH is progressive, having excellently fulfilled its core mandate of a teaching hospital by continuously providing top-notch tertiary health services and acing so many medical interventions’ The hospital decided to focus a bit on another of its core mandates, to establish relevant training institutions.
“The hospital has established five training schools, which are School of Anesthetic Technology, School of Orthopedic Cast Technology, School of Echocardiography, Caregiver Academy and the Institute of Advanced Professional Diploma in Hospital Administration and Management, which is being inaugurated today.”
Fabamwo reassured the first set of students that they would have top-notch facilitators who were carefully selected to provide them with practical knowledge.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Health’s representative, Prof Akin Abayomi, along with other officials, emphasized that the institute’s establishment is in line with the state government’s strategic goals of creating a high-quality healthcare system.
They highlighted the importance of investing in human capital to promote continuous learning and enhance the healthcare ecosystem’s resilience and responsiveness. Mrs. Olubunmi Fabamwo, the Chairman of the Civil Service Commission, expressed her professional appreciation for the institute’s inauguration and commended the hospital’s leadership for their decision.
She restated , “This move closes up a yawning gap in professionalization within a hospital environment, where virtually everyone is deemed to be a professional and everyone who is meant to manage them should be at par. This aligns with a circular passed in 2016, stating that the professionalization of the administrative cadre was approved.”
Similarly, Mrs. Busola Abidakun, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Establishment, Training, and Pensions, remarked that.
“Certifications only show a quest for knowledge and a knack for improvement, and that is why this initiative really brings me joy.”
She confirmed that the ministry is fully prepared to provide support to the institute and emphasized the importance of collaboration between the two organizations.
In my capacity as the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Establishment, Training and Pensions, my team and I have deliberated and we are ready to give everything we need to put into the works to make this Institute stand firm. This is greater Lagos rising and we are definitely up to the task.”
